Macon

What We Look For

In Macon, we support renewal of the urban core, nurturing an informed and engaged community, and building a creative economy.  Our community-based grant making in Macon is currently focused on implementation of the Macon Action Plan (MAP).  In particular, we are currently prioritizing initiatives which support:

  • Economic Development: Creating employment opportunities by encouraging entrepreneurial and traditional business development.
  • Bringing City Life Downtown: Expanding and launching uniquely “Macon” assets which draw audiences.
  • Public Spaces: Enhancing public space and parks and creating a bike-and-pedestrian-friendly downtown.

Significant Knight investments in Macon include our ongoing work in the Beall’s Hill neighborhood  and Mill Hill in addition to our historical work in the College Hill Corridor. All initiatives demonstrate that vibrant and diverse neighborhoods are a key to economic development.

Knight’s partnership in Mercer University’s Center for Collaborative Journalism trains journalists, while focusing on important community issues and engaging residents in problem-solving. An effective civic conversation requires timely, accurate and actionable information as well as the best, increasingly digital, tools of participation. We will continue to support information exchange, whether by neighbors, businesses, nonprofits, universities or government.

Macon has a strong music heritage, and a wealth of arts and artists for whom we want Macon to remain home base. However, creativity is not just for our artists; it’s for all. Knight supports creative approaches to building a 21st century economy, whether through innovation, artistic expression or entrepreneurship. Learn more about our arts strategy here.
